I'm hearing there's a couple apps out there that are popular with teens on Social media that encourage a "suicide challenge" and anonymous cyber bullying.

The "Blue Whale Challenge" and "Sarahah" are both gaining in popularity and can be deadly.

We've also had 2 suicides this week in Wadsworth.

Combine this with teachers and administrators that won’t do shit about this bullying when approached by students having problems. It’s a damn shame.

Personally I think it’s not as much an increase in bullying, cyber or live, but a complete lack of ability to acquire and manage real life relationships.  Everything is an app, a text, etc.   they don’t even talk to each other on the phones, just text, like, snap, tweet.

When shit really gets depressing to them, they have no one to call, no one to come over, no one to hug, no ability to sooth and work through it.

There’s not an app for that.

Ban the phones from school and bring back recess.  Give these kids a damn chance.

Btw, do you know my kid in 4th grade has a combined half hour for recess and lunch?  That’s not even enough time to eat yet have any meaningful interaction with other kids.

I don't think anyone disagrees Spize.  Point being our obsession with social media and iphones etc is destroying social and coping skills, and basically causing mental illnesses that we are only beginning to understand. 

And I specifically say "our" not their.  Not just kids it's all of us. 

I seriously hope our district and other area schools are addressing this issue as we speak!!!  And obviously if you are a parent don't wait on them!

And thanks for the heads up LA.  I try to stay on top of all these harmful apps and parental controls etc, but sometimes I feel like it is a lost cause.  Too old to keep up.  But I do constantly discuss it with them.

SPOT ON in regards to cell phones in school! Complete bullshit! I went to Massillons freshman orientation last year and this was a exact quote from the Principal at that time...."we compromised with the kids this year and have decided they can only use their cell phones during study hall and lunch"...... Ummmmm, isnt study hall for studying and catching up on work? And why and the hell are we compromising with kids?

Very true statement. Some parents will not let you discipline little Johnny or Jane, even though they may deserve it. Also, some may be surprised that a "few" teachers are just as much to blame for what kids can do or get away with because they don't or won't follow the administration's rules. Kids in school today have WAY to many freedoms.
