Title: Dumbing Down of Massillon

If the only reason City Council gives for allowing marijuana growers to come in is that it creates tax dollars and a few jobs, then Massillon is in worse shape than I thought.

C'mon Man!

This is the type of business that Massillon needs, unfortunately, there's no million people in the area! Amazon is looking for a new 2nd home to house 50,000 employees. (from Reuters News)

Sept 7 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc.  said on Thursday it was searching for a location to build its second headquarters in North America that would cost more than $5 billion and house up to 50,000 staff.

The e-commerce company, which is headquartered in Seattle, said it was seeking proposals from local and state government leaders and would select the location next year. [nBw75mZtNa]

Amazon's workforce has exploded to more than 380,000 from under 25,000 since it moved to Seattle in 2010, as it rapidly expanded to become a global retailer - selling everything from groceries to appliances.

The company's total revenue has grown to $136 billion at the end of last year from $34 billion in 2010. Amazon recently snatched up Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion.

Amazon said the new headquarters should ideally be located in a metropolitan area with more than one million people, potentially giving the company a shopping list of more than 50 cities to choose from.

The project would initially need more than 500,000 square feet and up to 8 million square feet beyond 2027, Amazon said.

"We want to find a city that is excited to work with us and where our customers, employees, and the community can all benefit," Amazon said.

Amazon is looking for a favorable tax structure and local government subsidies, incentives that have attracted other companies like Taiwan-based Foxconn to build facilities in the United States.

Foxconn plans to build a $10 billion liquid crystal display factory in Wisconsin. The state's Republican-controlled government had voted to approve a bill aimed at establishing a $3 billion incentive package for the plant.

Amazon expects the new headquarters to be a "full equal" to its Seattle office, Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

The Seattle campus is spread across 8.1 million square feet in 33 buildings and employs more than 40,000 people.

Amazon's shares were up 1 percent at $978 on Thursday morning.

So does that mean the the Tiger Town Grille and Pub will become a distribution center for said medication?? It would seem like a logical location to me from what I've read.

To: Massillon Mayor Catazaro-Perry and City Officials
From: Jeff Bezos, CEO, Amazon
Subject: New Location

I would strongly suggest you get the idea of presenting a proposal to us completely out of your heads to save yourself from showing your complete ineptitude, lack of vision, and pure ignorance.
Thank you for your cooperation.

LOL. Purely in jest (Bezos didn't really write that) but I'm sure that's what he would say if he knew anything about the place.

50,000 employees would definitely exceed the 32,000 people in massillon

If, by some bizarre constellation of extremely unlikely events, Amazon builds a 2nd HQ in Massillon, weed will be the least of the problems.  Amazon will import those Seattle and Bay Area ultra libs.  Massillon will become a sanctuary city, a gun free zone, little electric kiddie cars will be mandatory, taxes will triple, and safe spaces will be set aside at PBTS.

Oh, and Massillon.com will be shutdown because of hate speech and micro aggressions.

The idea that Massillon....even if it met the initial requirements that Amazon has set for their new center.....would be ready to present a plan to Jeff Bezos...... is ludicrous.

While other cities have been working for months on a plan to attract the long rumored second Amazon center, the biggest concern our administration had yesterday was that rain would ruin Fall Fest.

And the pie eating contest would be cancelled.

Which, of course, it was.

Other cities have brilliant strategic thinkers crafting their proposals.....we have KatCat, and Dave Maley....a nice enough fellow, but a political favor appointment, to be sure.

Our shining civic example of The Peter Principle at work.

Can you imagine Jeff Bezos or his COO meeting these two?

No.....all Massillon can offer is what is evidenced daily on this board:

Memories.

Reality sucks, Gentlemen.

Lol, the fall fest was a total cluster phuck. Yes it's on, come on down. Sorry it's cancelled, we'll reschedule at a later date. No wait, come down, no band but food trucks will be here. Sorry no pie eating contest, oh yeah, we'll have face painting available. Massillon attracting Amazon....good luck with that, they're too busy with deep negotiations trying to secure a premier location for the "new and improved" Tiger Town Grille ......shhh it's a secret.

Any reason to rip Massillon, lol.  There will certainly be a lot of competition - like everyone in the country.  I read that Gilbert is putting a proposal together for.......Detroit.  Hmmm.

Jackson would be a nice fit in NE OH.  And they have the land.  Massillon would benefit greatly.  I would think any serious proposal would have to involve the entire County and probably multiple counties, and the state of OHIO.

I doubt that go to anywhere that isn't business cooperative. Northeast Ohio is anything but that.

If somebody put a package together that involved a group from Stark and Summit county and proposed land near the Akron Canton Airport or better yet the land had direct access to the airport you might get somewhere. You have the highways close, you have the airport next door, you have tons of land to use. it's a win for all of NE Ohio. Just have to find somebody smart enough to put it together.

You also have to also take into consideration where the competition will be coming from. Big, and I would say impossible mountain to climb. As a for instance. Would you pick CAK (Akron-Canton) area or Charlotte? Or Dallas? Or hell anywhere.

Have to agree with Egret, realistically.  Any money spent chasing this might be better invested in the power lotto, to be spread evenly among tax-paying residents.

Pet peeve btw, seems every time I run into Circle K for a kid's gatorade I get stuck behind that guy.  You know the one dressed like a hobo but has $40 to blow, then stays at the counter because he can't even make it back to the car to see if he won.  >:(

You should read this..http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/12/17/amazon_warehouses_in_kenosha_wisconsin.html (http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/12/17/amazon_warehouses_in_kenosha_wisconsin.html)

More importantly read the last couple lines about proximity to metropolitan Areas.
Amazon prides itself on quick delivery, and one method for that speediness (besides drone delivery) is having warehouses scattered throughout the United States. Kenosha's proximity to the largest metro area in the Midwest is ideal, and it sorely needs the economic revitalization.

I believe Akron Canton is in the middle of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis. Why do you think they picked Kenosha Wisconsin? Lots of land close to airports and low taxes.

I posted that about Amazon looking for a 2nd headquarters as a joke. Get it out of your heads that they would even consider this area, that's insane.

My bet is on one of the "Right to Work" states that don't require employees to pay union dues. There are 28 of them now, I believe, after Kentucky recently passed legislation to make themselves one. Plenty of bluegrass to open up a campus and the Cincinnati airport is actually in Kentucky.

Another possibility just 40 miles north of Cincy is Wilmington, Ohio. In 2008, DHL left there and laid off 7,500 employees with their own private airport facility. Rumors have it that Amazon has been using this airport for a couple years already. Check this article out....https://www.geekwire.com/2015/report-amazon-operating-a-secret-air-cargo-operation-out-of-former-dhl-facility-in-ohio/

Either location has a much better potential employee base in terms of population, age, education, etc. than anywhere in NE Ohio.

Massillon would be better off investing in a few shares of AMZN stock.

Wow I didn't know that about Wilmington. What an interesting article. Sure makes sense if they are already using the airport that they have some familiarity with the geography and the people. Massillon, you just worry about getting that next Tigertown Grille or Jimmy John's down there, OK?

Amazon is reportedly looking for a 2nd HQ.  That means management, admin, finance, IT.  Not shipping & distribution.  To me that spells local talent pool, housing & quality of life (i. e. ability to attract talent).  Do the math.

*Article is meant as a serious discussion, but this has not actually happened yet. I am really just hopeful that Amazon picks Columbus. No actual announcements have been made and I am sure plenty of people will comment that their city is better. I look forward to that discussion.

Well I can tell you with 100% certainty that Facebook is building a massive Data Center in New Albany outside of Columbus. How do I know this, my company is working on this project and we are working for Cupertino Construction. The second thing I know is Amazon bought 1200 acres right next to this project. Now whether they build their or not, I don’t know yet.

I’m sorry sir, the Massillon government is busy working on critical budgetary issues like funding a drug dealer’s hamburger stand and figuring out how to buy the Mayor’s husband a hospital.

Please leave a message and someone may call you when hell freezes over regarding your legitimate taxpayer concern.

Not to Pee on your Cheerios but Amazon just bought 700 plus acres right down the street from the Facebook Data center being built in New Albany east of Columbus. The Facebook complex is 3 million SQ feet.
