The Super Gumbo Bowl

This year's Super Bowl observations....
The best the Colts could do is a 42 year old Matt Stover for kicker? Attempting the 51 yarder in the second half was a mistake.
No one should say Peyton Manning is a flop or can't win the big one, etc. The guy has already won a Super Bowl.
The Colts have great defensive speed. They just got beat by a QB (Brees) playing unbelievable football. A Massillon Tiger is the Colts' defensive coordinator, Larry Coyer. If anything, the Colts could use more emphasis on the running game. Guys like Joseph Addai and Donald Brown and Mike Hart are decent backs. Run them more. There is no reason for them to be ranked 32nd in rushing offense. Yes, Manning is good and you need to air it out with his arm. At the same time, the Colt defense could use a bit more of a break and running the ball more would have made the Colts more balanced and dangerous. Also, a healthy Anthony Gonzales would have made a big difference.
Sean Payton outcoached Jim Caldwell. New Orleans had that Pete Carroll-like "go for it" strategy with the onside kick and going for it on 4th down more than once.
The best commercial was, of course, the Miller High Life commercials with Wendell the Delivery Guy promoting Great American small businesses. 100% Rider Land approved commercial.

A great Super Bowl game to watch. I didn't care who won so I just sat back, relaxed, and watched some very good football with some very good coaching. It's great for the City of New Orleans to savor this victory. Contrary to the great TigerCarl I truly believe the players have embraced this city, played this game for the city, and dedicated the win to the city. To a player everyone of them talked about what it meant for them to be a part of the New Orleans community and what this win would mean not only to the team but to the citizens of New Orleans. Congrats to the Saints. It is a victory well deserved.

If those same players were on some other team in some other city, they'd embrace THAT city just the same as they embrace New Orleans. It's just plain smart PR, and you can bet their front office is pushing that attitude the entire way. It's no different than when some Michigan kid goes to play football for the University of Alabama -- suddenly he loves the place and can't imagine being anywhere else.
Sorry, Fl Tiger -- not intending to hurt your feelings. I'm just a cynic when it comes to pro sports, which I believe I already explained to you. It's show biz. And they're well-paid entertainers who bust their tails to keep their jobs. Vegas dancers do the same thing, only for less money.
Someday, we might have a nice friendly talk about the reality of pro sports. Or maybe you'd rather avoid thinking that your heros really aren't heros. Maybe you don't want to mentally accept that they're just guys like you, only with bigger bodies and a lot more physical talent. Inside, they're as diverse as the general population. And when their contract is up, if somebody offers them double the money -- swosh! -- they're gone!
So much for player loyalty to a community.
